Update from my previous post regarding the engine running rough.  First time doing this...  After doing some searching on the national Valk tech board, I decided to start with what I thought was easiest.  I found quite a few references to the fuel filter.  That sounded easier than cleaning and tuning carbs.  The only carbs I know are in pasta.  Smiley

I saw a couple references to a screen in the gas tank.  So I took off the gas tank.  Then I took off the petcock.  Not being experienced at this, I'm thinking once the petcock is off I'll see the screen.  umm...nope.  So where's this mysterious "fuel screen"?  Is it up in the tank, meaning I need to take the tank in for cleaning?  Or is it inside the petcock?  I've got the Clymer manual but it doesn't mention anything about it.

Thanks for any advice!

the screen is in the fuel tank when you pulled the petcock out you will see a plastic type ring that the petcock goes into on the tank grab ahold of that and pull it out....but I don't think that is your problem...I have done three valks and two of them I bought where used and sat for awhile...I tried sea foam and other things ...best thing to do is pull the carbs and replace slow jets and while your in there do a de-smog you won't regret it...if your not mechanical give Fuzzy or Cory a call they both do good work.

Don't know if there are any unintended side effects, but you may consider trying some fuel additives intended to clean out carburetors. Mine was starting a little hard and it seemed to help.

I bought an 03 standard 7 or 8 months ago and it had been sitting up a good while.  Would not run right at low rpm's.  I tried a couple of cans of Sea Foam and a couple of bottles of Techron but this only helped a little.  Ordered new jets and was waiting to be off work and a time when I was not going to be riding (which is not often).  Had a friend who is an old hot rodder and he told me to try Berrymans B12 before I tore into it.  Put a half can of b12 into about 2 gals. of gas.  Drove it a few miles at low rpm's to make sure it had gotten to the jets and had filled the bowls.  Came home and let it sit for about 5 days.  Fired it up and the sucker purred like a kitten.  I know a lot of guys on this board have experienced the same problem.  Try the b12 before wrenching on it.  Don't go by instructions on can.  Put about a half can with a couple gals. of gas.  Works great and is cheap stuff.  Get it at Wallyworld or any parts store.
